Dance Floor

The dance floor is the heart of every celebration. Its size, position and lighting largely decide whether the party ignites.

Whether a party works depends surprisingly strongly on the dance floor: it should be central, visible from the tables and not too large – a half-full small floor feels fuller (and more inviting) than a huge empty one. Bar and DJ belong close by.

Light plays its part too: a brightly lit floor inhibits, dimmed party light lowers the threshold. And if nobody sits with their back to the floor, guests join the action faster.

A few practical points make a real difference to how quickly a floor fills:

  • Central position: visible from the tables so dancing feels like part of the celebration.
  • Right size: compact enough that it never looks empty, with the bar and DJ close by.
  • Dimmed lighting: low enough to lower the threshold, so people feel free to dance.

A common instinct is to book the biggest possible floor “just in case”. In reality an oversized floor looks empty for most of the night and actually discourages people from stepping on. It is far better to have a compact, central floor that feels lively even with a handful of dancers. When you visit a venue, picture where guests will sit and how far they have to walk to dance – that short distance matters more than square metres.

Frequently asked questions

How big should the dance floor be at a wedding?

Smaller than most people expect. A compact, central floor looks lively even with a few dancers, while an oversized one looks empty for most of the night and puts people off stepping on. Aim for a floor that feels comfortably full with a portion of your guests dancing, and keep the bar and DJ close by.

Where is the best position for the dance floor?

Central and visible from the dining tables, so dancing feels like part of the celebration rather than tucked away in a corner. The bar and DJ should be nearby, and ideally no one sits with their back to the floor. Dimmed party lighting over the area also lowers the threshold and encourages guests to join in sooner.
